For the 3rd pathfinder, we discussed what is collage, and what we could hear.
They all chose to use magazines and a punch paper cutter (circle shape) to do their collage and wanted to draw on it as well with oil pastels.
Here is our discussion (I did not register all of what they were saying about the collage, just about what they could hear):
"We still must do two artworks for our friends in Czech Republic. We will do one today, and the last one later this week, after meeting them online!
So, today, we are going to make a collage. Do you know what a collage is? A collage is one of the many ways to create artworks. For example, to paint is another way to create an artwork, or to draw with color pencils... How else can you create an artwork? [they gave other examples]
A collage is when different elements are assembled to create a new element, a new whole. Think of it like a puzzle: a puzzle is made by lots of different pieces who don't look like much when you look at them separately; but put them together and you have a beautiful and interesting image.
So, to do a collage we can use many different things: dry pasta, wool, cotton, fabric, wood, leaves, cardboard, newspaper, magazines, colored paper... It's completely up to you what you're going to choose for your collage. We are also going to need scissors and glue to cut and assemble all our pieces together.
Ok, are we ready? Let's start! But wait, what our collage will be about? Well, since we want our friend in Czech Republic to learn about ourselves, perhaps we could do a collage about the sounds that we can hear around us; our friends in Czech Republic are not here with us, so they can’t listen the same things that we can here and now, can they? [they talked about it mentioning that the Little Owls lives in a big town so it must be different]
So, close your eyes and your mouth and open your ears. Listen… Listen to all the different sounds we can hear... What can you hear? What's the loudest noise you can hear? What's the quietest noise? Can you hear a noise that you can’t see, that is not here in this room?
Leon: I can hear Ægir, a man walking, a door that's being closed, that's it.
Úlfur: I can hear paper, a teacher, "biiiip!", electricity.
Anton: I can hear a little baby crying.
Katla: I can hear something that fell on the floor! And a baby crying.
Ægir: I can hear Rafael (a staff member), a door, men talking, some weird noises.
Hörður Áki: I can hear "prrrrrrrt!", "biiiiiip", something that I don´t know what it is, and my breathing.
So many sounds to listen to... So now keep being silent, keep your ears wide open and your mouth closed, and open your eyes to create a collage about what you can hear. Remember, if we’re silent, it’s easier to listen to the noises that exists around us."
Kindly,
